THE SERVICE HANDBOOK · SALT LAKE + UTAH COUNTIES

Lighting installation.
Know what to ask.

Describe the use of each space, the fixture positions and any controls you want changed. A fixture swap, recessed-light layout and outdoor installation are different projects. Share photographs and a simple room plan without disturbing existing wiring.

During the assessment

Ask whether the existing wiring, boxes and controls are suitable for the proposed fixtures. For exterior or damp locations, explain the conditions and ask how the installation will address them. Confirm what must be assessed on site before the quote can be finalized.

Compare the complete scope

Compare fixture supply, installation, controls, access openings, testing and surface repair. Ask who selects compatible components and what happens if the existing wiring needs additional work. A count of fixtures alone does not describe the complete installed scope.

Have these details ready

  • Fixture type and preferred locations
  • Existing switch and control arrangement
  • Interior, exterior or moisture exposure
  • Who supplies fixtures and handles surface repairs

Can I compare lighting quotes by fixture count alone?

Fixture count is only part of the scope. Wiring condition, access, controls, fixture supply and surface repairs can differ between proposals. Ask each electrician to describe those items so the installation estimates refer to the same work.
